Chrissie Godfrey uses Otto Scharmer’s “Theory U” to take people beyond the traditional “downloading” and implementing of old problem solving strategies, and towards connecting with a ‘deeper place of knowing’. Here, we can access a sense of connection to a greater whole, of what ‘needs to happen’ in a situation. Chrissie’s award of MSc (Dist) in Change Agency used Theory “U” as a key focus for her experiential research.
However, Theory “U” is not an intellectual concept, but a response to a realm of human experience which has many different manifestations, from creative inspiration to profound insight. Such knowing is often characterised by heightened flow or synchronicity in action. As a leadership or development tool, the “U” process can help to surface profound and surprising insights. It will appeal to those who value authenticity in their work and life.
An introductory exploration of Theory “U” typically happens in a group of 6-8 people with common interests or concerns, and takes a day, in a quiet setting with space for walking or being outside.
